Sounds of the South Loop – May 23rd – Young, old, congregants, friends and neighbors all heard the ‘hot ,hot sounds’ of Alfonso Ponticelli and Swing Gitan on a hot Sunday afternoon…but it was the cool, cool jazz that kept more than 150 people enthralled for an afternoon of wonderful entertainment. We welcomed dozens of first timers to the Church & concert. Thanks to all who helped make this a very successful day.

Calling for Benefactors

Second Presbyterian is currently seeking a benefactor(s) to place a stone sign and announcement board outside. This is your opportunity to put in stone a landmark on a landmark. Second church is a James Renwick design completed in 1874. Our sign will become part of this landmark and announce the church’s proceedings to the community as well as share the name. The church is seeking a single donation of $15,000 for placement and construction of the sign at the front of the church. This could be from an individual, group, community, or organization. Any such donation will be permanently and forever preserved by notating the donor’s name in stone for all to find. Your donation will be tax deductible. Pancake Breakfast Photos

If you missed the Men’s Presbytery Pancake Breakfast last week, you missed a good meal and some good company! We had a pretty good turn out even with the snow showers. And from the looks of the pictures, I would say the customers were happy!

Partners meeting held at Unity Temple

This week 2nd Presbyterian’s Partners for Sacred Places committee met for module III training at Frank Lloyd Wright’s Unity Temple in Oak Park, IL. It was a great turnout by many member churches and synagogues from around Chicago.

As a special treat, after lunch we got to have a tour of the sanctuary led by their pastor.

Did you know:

Unity Temple was the first poured concrete structure to be started (but due to the scale of the project, not finished)
The church does not feature a steeple, but rather stained glass windows to remind us that “God is among us.”
Steel pieces originally embedded in the concrete for strength, today actually cause problems when rusting by increasing in size up to 9x and creating cracks in the concrete.

All very interesting. 2ndPresbyterian has a lot in common with Unity Temple, including location in the Chicago area and a famous architect as well. I encourage you to join us Sundays at 11:00 or during the week for tours.
