Celebratory plans and events continue as we mark the 175th anniversary of the founding of Second Presbyterian Church of Chicago on June 1, 1842.
Our church Rededication Service will occur on Sunday, June 4 at 11:00a.m. Bagpipes will play and a special sermon will summon us to the church’s and our own rededication to the legacy of service to God and community that Second Presbyterian holds dear. As is our custom on the Sunday of Pentecost, we invite you to wear an item of red symbolizing the gift of the Holy Spirit. The sacrament of Holy Communion will be celebrated. After the service, a festive brunch will be served.
All are invited to a Community Birthday Party celebrating the 175th anniversary of the church on Thursday, June 15 from 4:00 – 8:00 pm. There will be free cake and ice cream, games, prizes, music, art projects, and more for families from the community and the church. This is also the kick-off for the South Loop Farmer’s Market. Join the fun!
The 175th Anniversary Quilt featuring 175 angels is underway. Packets with all the materials needed to make one square (plus specific instructions) are available before and after church on Sundays. Finished quilt squares are due back by May 15. Don’t miss the opportunity to be part of this historic quilt!
Second Presbyterian Church was organized on June 1, 1842 and has been a functioning house of worship continuously for one hundred seventy-five years. Since the sanctuary of the church contains 175 angels depicted in murals, stained glass windows, carved wood and molded plaster, the church has chosen “In the Company of Angels” as the theme for the year-long celebration.
